Below is a meditation which I wrote which will help you open, cleanse, strengthen, then close your Chakras. This is best done once a week or so to keep your chakras healthy. As with most things, if this is the first time you have done it or it has been a while, you may find it more difficult, or that there is too much to cleanse. Stick with it, and it will get easier.
Step One: Opening Your Chakras:
Prepare for meditation however you usually would.
Start with the root chakra; imagine it opening like an eye. See it glowing with a red light.
Do this with the remaining Chakras, working your way up; an orange light for your sacral, yellow for your solar plexus, green for your heart, blue for your throat, purple for your third eye, and white for your crown.

Step 2: Cleansing your Chakras:
Now, on the ground beneath you, at your feet, visualise a black hole. This black hole will act as a vacuum, sucking out any negativity from your chakras.
Start with your root chakra; visualise the black hole sucking out any negativity (I usually see these as black flecks or spots) and into itself, down into the earth where this energy will be renewed as positive energy and reused.
Do this for each of your chakras, again working your way up to the crown chakra

Step 3: Strengthening your Chakras:
For this we are going to be using the mudras and their sounds; make sure you have these in front of you. It can be difficult to remember, so if you need to open your eyes to remind yourself of them throughout the meditation then do so. As you chant the sounds, see or feel the vibration of the sound permeating your chakra, making the light shine brighter and stronger.
Start with the root chakra, and chant 'LLLAAAAAMM' three times.
Move to the sacral chakra, and chant 'VVVAAAAAMM' three times.
Move to the solar plexus, and chant 'RRRAAAAAMM' three times.
Move to the heart chakra, and chant 'YYYAAAAAMM' three times.
Move to the throat chakra, and chant 'HHHAAAAAMM' three times.
Move to the third eye chakra, and chant 'OOOHHHHHMM' three times.
Move to the crown chakra, and chant 'AAANNNNNGG' three times.
Finally, go back down to the root chakra, perform the mudra, and chant the corresponding sound just once. Repeat this with the sacral once, the solar plexus, the heart, the throat, the third eye and the crown

Step 4: Closing the Chakras:
Visualise a giant zip, starting at your groin and running up your body. It is currently open, the teeth of the zipper running up either side of your chakras.
Now, mentally pull this zip up past your root chakra, and see your root chakra zipping up, closing completely, your chakra energy now being stored within your body.
Keep pulling the zip up, and see this closing each chakra in turn in the same way, right up past your crown chakra, to the top of your head. It is important to make sure that we make sure we close our chakras; this can help prevent negative energy from seeping in, but also stop our energy from 'leaking'. Trust that they still be working, beneath your skin, keeping you energised and empowered.
