Fluorite

The word ‘Fluorite’ comes from the Latin ‘fluo’ meaning stream or flow of water. It was originally called fluorospar and was first really discussed in a 1530AD piece of work named ‘Bermannus; Sive De Re Metallica Dialogus’, or ‘Bermannus; Or A Dialogue About the Nature of Metals’ which was written by Georgius Agricola. It was noted for its usefulness as a flux, (which again is taken from the Latin to mean ‘flowing water’). Recently, the term ‘fluorspar’ is commonly used to refer to Fluorite as its industrial and chemical sense, whilst fluorite is used mineralogicallly and metaphysically.

I have a green piece of Fluorite which I bought just for the sheer hell of it.  It has a very strong and very vibrant aura; I got the impression that this was a ‘get-up-and-go’ sort of stone, one that would bring a clear-cut clarity, especially in spiritual matters, and could help one identify spiritual blockages and obstacles and help you to face them. Maybe physical ‘real world’ obstacles too, but I felt it was a more ‘spiritual’ stone.

Fluorite is commonly associated with the intellect, “sharpening mental faculties and improving discernment”. It considered to assist “concentration and impartiality”, which makes it an excellent crystal for reasoning and problem-solving.

Fluorite is also strongly connected with psychic powers and the aura; it absorbs and neutralizes negative energies and cleanses and stabilizes the aura, as well as promoting a general sense of spiritual and psychic awareness and wholeness. It is associated with truth, protection and peace.

I found this interesting insight over on http://earthandstars.org/articles/terra/fluorite/ in regards to fluorite and psychic work:

“Now, I was also taught that fluorite was an excellent stone for psychic shielding, though I haven’t seen this written in any of the sources I use. Essentially, fluorite can be used as the first line of defense for psychically sensitive people who feel overwhelmed in groups or populated areas, or who haven’t yet fully developed their own methods of shielding. It acts to dampen the “background noise” but doesn’t completely shut it out, making it easier for sensitive people to stay open without being overwhelmed. And in my experience, it does work well for this, especially when worn as jewelry. Personally, I’ve wondered how this ties into the stone’s ability to sharpen mental abilities as I mentioned earlier, and my hypothesis is that by strengthening and clarifying one’s thoughts, it allows one to see better what thoughts are one’s own, and which ones are coming from outside. This makes it easier to shut out the background noise, though all of this may only happen on an unconscious level. Anyway, that’s how I draw a connection between these two uses for fluorite, and others may disagree.”

Fluorite also has benefits for the physical body. It boosts the immune system and encourages the regeneration of cells especially in the skin and respiratory tract and assists in the absorption of vital nutrients. It strengthens the lungs, spleen, blood vessels, bone tissue (especially the enamel on teeth), and alleviates rheumatism, arthritis and spinal injuries, as well as healing ulcers, sore throats and wounds and helps soothe heart burn, indigestion and insomnia, the discomfort of shingles and other nerve-related pains. In fact, green Fluorite such as the one I have been using is a great healing crystal on all levels and also promotes self-love. Its cleansing abilities have also been linked to its healing properties.

It is also a good balancer, both physically and spiritually and can help regularize the effects of hormonal imbalance, anxiety, pre-menstrual and menopausal states. It is suggested that green Fluorite be given to someone who is undergoing, but is tired of medical treatments, to help strengthen their natural resistance to the illness and to quiet their minds and their fears when results are slow. However, I absolutely do not recommend stopping medical treatment unless you have agreed on this with your doctor.

Cassandra Eason sums up the various uses of Green Fluorite in her book “The Illustrated Directory of
Crystal Healing” which I have summarized below:

Other Uses of Fluorite:

Home and Work: Use to create order out of chaos, to focus a large group of people (such as a family) on a specific task, and to strengthen and stabilize any sort of relationship or cooperative venture.

Children: Great for encouraging a reluctant student

Animals: Place it in the garden to attract butterflies

Protective Functions: Protect against disease and envy

Psychic Associations: Wonderful for meditation in the open air and to channel the wisdom of nature
essences, especially water spirits. It strengthens the value of herbs, flowers and trees when used in
magick and healing, and empowers herbs used in healing. A wand made from green fluorite will
direct energies from nature in your heart. Green Fluorite is also associated with the lost city of
Atlantis, and it is believed that individual pieces can transmit the stored wisdom and healing of the past millennia, and that pyramid shaped green fluorite crystals can help you see visions of Atlantis
and other lost worlds beneath the sea. It can also be used to heal plants or damaged crystals.

Environment: Green Fluorite will send healing energies to places that are no longer green, and
threatened wildlife habitats.
