When using a new divination tool, many practitioners decide to cleanse, empower, and connect with their chosen tool. Now, this isn't an absolute necessity - I will admit that I have jumped into using divination tools without doing any of this prep work. However, following the processes outlined below can help remove any unwanted or negative energies from your tool, as well as help you build a deeper connection with it, which will strengthen your divination.
Cleansing:
There are several different methods you can choose for cleansing your tool. Try and pick a method which is suitable for the material you are using; for example, tarot cards and some crystals don't react well to water, so you might be best using a different method than the running water one. Below are some quick and easy ways of cleansing:
Whichever method you choose, visualisation is very import. Focus on all negative and unwated energies being 'washed' from your tool - I find that visualising a white light permeating the tool helps.
You may wish to use a more formal ritual using the five elements to cleanse them, although this isn't entirely necessary. For me, I find that this formality helps to establish intent and creates a stronger bond. Below is a ritual I wrote which will help if you prefer to do something a bit more complex; I say I wrote it, it's a very standard ritual format for cleansing, so I can't take any credit for the idea of the ritual!
You will need:
A candle
A bowl or cup of water
Salt
Incense
A pentacle; you can even just draw one onto a piece of paper if you like
First, imagine your feet like roots, flowing deep into the ground. They anchor you to the earth and connect you.
Take a deep breath, clear your mind. Pick up your tool and hold it aloft and say:
"I come here now to cleanse this [tool name], in the name of the Great Goddess, the keeper of mysteries and the bringer of truth. May it be rid of all negativity",
Take a pinch of salt and sprinkle it over the stone and say "with the element of earth I cleanse this [tool name] of all negativity in this world and in the astral".
Now pass it through your incense smoke and say "with the element of air I cleanse this [tool name] of all negativity in this world and in the astral".
Pass it over the flame of the candle and say "with the element of fire I cleanse this [tool name] of all negativity in this world and in the astral".
Sprinkle some of the water over it and say "with the element of water I cleanse this [tool name] of all negativity, in this world and in the astral".
Place your tool in the middle of the pentagram.
Now, visualise a pillar of white light coming down from the skies, shining upon your stones. This is the light of the Goddess, pure and cleansing, removing all negativity and blessing your stones with her power. If it helps, hold your hands over the stones and visualise the energy being channelled through your body, down through your arms and out through your hands. Or you can place your fingers in a triangle over the stones and visualise the energy being focused through this point and into the stones. Say:
"In the name of the Great Goddess, she who reveals the hidden truths and casts light upon all that is unknown, I cleanse and bless these stones of all negativity, that they may be used to divine the future and help me see the unseen. So mote it be!"

- Pass it through the smoke of an incense
- Hold it under running water (a tap will do)
- Bury it in earth for 24 hours (can be messy and earth can get stuck places)
- Cleanse it in the light of a full moon; as the moon represents intuition, divination and psychic abilities then this would be a very apt approach

Empowering Your Tool:
There are many different ways you can charge an object with your intent once you have created it. These include:
Your intent is to imbue your tool with the ability to give you accurate readings, to act as a conduit between you and your higher self, so make sure you keep this in mind no matter which method you choose.
Connecting With Your Tool:
There are many different ways you can charge an object with your intent once you have created it. These include:
- Chanting Mantra's over your object, such as 'This tool brings me visions and connects me with my second sight.'
- Raising energy and directing that energy into the object; you can do this by drumming, dancing, chanting, or using an energy ball, infusing it with your intent and then absorbing that energy ball into your object.
- Place your object inside a crystal grid which utilises crystals which are associated with divination to charge your items
- You can use your own breath, to breathe your intent into your object
Your intent is to imbue your tool with the ability to give you accurate readings, to act as a conduit between you and your higher self, so make sure you keep this in mind no matter which method you choose.
Connecting With Your Tool:
- Carry your tool with you; place it in your pocket, in your bag, even under your pillow when you sleep. This will help you attune to its energy, and it to yours
- Meditate with it
- 'Play' with it! For tarot decks, you can find 'interview' spreads online which will help you to get a better understanding of your deck. Otherwise, just ask some basic, maybe even silly questions, and just get used to how it responds
- Talk to your tool; it may sound a bit silly, but talking to it can help. Your voice releases vibrations, and your breath is imprinted with your energy, so again it is another way to attune to its energy, and allow it to attune to your
