What is a water witch? The name kind of says it all - it is a witch who works magick using primarily the element of water. Over 70% of the earth's surface is covered in water, and the oceans hold just over 95% of all life on earth. With roughly 60% of the human body being comprised of water, our connection to the element of water is great, but one which is easy to overlook.
The water witch is aware of this, and strives to find balance, and work with the energies of water to bring themselves in line with the natural world. Working with the tides, different bodies of water, water spirits and deities, they bring magick into their lives and find harmony with the world. This isn't to say that they only work exclusively with the element of water (although some do). They may also incorporate other elements into their practice to enhance it, such as herbs and crystals (which are traditionally associated with the element of earth). However, water is the element they feel most in tune with, and it is this that fuels their practice.
The water witch often incorporates lunar and solar magick into their practice. The moon and the sun's gravitational pull combine to control the tides, and as such, are seen as a part of water witchcraft. Another common practice of the water witch (although it tends to be more commen in those that practice sea witchcraft) is weather magick. As the oceans also affect the weather, many water witches find working with the weather beneficial to their magick.
There is always the question as to whether you can be a water witch if you live inland and don't have access to natural bodies of water such as the sea, or ponds and rivers. Some practitioners feel strongly that you can't consider yourself a water witch unless you work or live near water and can experience it every day. I think this is crap; with so much of ourselves and our every day lives being connected with the element of water, I don't think you need to be living near a large body of water to be a water witch. There is plenty you can do to connect with the energy of water every day, and some of those practices are listed in the water witch section of this site

Whilst rituals and meditations are great, there are other things you can do to bring water energies into your life. Below are some quick and easy suggestions to help you connect to them regularly:
- Burn some incense which reminds you of the scent of the sea. It can be difficult to find incense that smells exactly like the sea, but there are some good ones out there
- Create yourself a water altar, or decorate your house with things that remind you of water; sea shells, pictures of water animals, feathers from water dwelling birds, statues of mermaids, etc.
- Use soap and body wash with sea based or associated scents, such as coconut, or body scrubs with seaweed in, etc.
- Wear seashell jewellery, or pins, or crystals which remind you of the element of water
- Wearing the colour blue, turquoise, green, and other colours associated with water
- Listening to 'water' sounds whilst you do the cleaning or tidy the house; the app Headspace has a large number in their 'sleep' section, including rain, seas, and waterfalls
