The Why?
One of the most basic yet important techniques you can learn is to create a protective shield of energy around yourself, and others. Think about your day to day life and the number of people you meet; if like me you live in a big city and commute on trains, tubes, buses, etc., then you are in the presence of hundreds of people a day. People can emit energy without realising, and this can cause issues when that energy is negative. If you happen to be in the sphere of a persons negative energy chances are you will sense it or pick some of it up. Likewise, some people 'feed' off of others energy, sometimes without realising. Suddenly that good mood you left the house with is gone; you may feel negative for no apparent reason, anxious, tired and drained.

The How?
This technique relies heavily on visualisation which can be tough at first, but as with most things, the more you practice the easier it becomes. Focus on trying to feel the energy first, before trying to actually see it.
To begin, ground and centre. I usually centre into my heart chakra and focus on pulling my energy into this area. See the energy building in your centre. Focus on your breathing, and use your breath to expand the energy out; as you inhale focus on pulling energy in towards you, as you exhale focus on pushing the energy out. Push this energy out through your skin and see it form a bubble or skin-suit around you, a protective shield which has the intention of blocking everything out. Most guidance will tell you to visualise a bubble, but I personally find it easier to form this 'bubble' around my body so it takes the shape of me first, before expanding it into a bubble (I found this way easier when I was beginning, or if I've been neglecting it for a while).
If you are having problems visualising this energy coming from your body, them visualise yourself standing in a puddle of light, then see this light rising up to form a bubble around you, encompassing you entirely.

You may wish to visualise a ball of fire, a bubble with walls of mirrors to reflect negative energies, or maybe just as a ball of all encompassing light.

It is worth thinking about the effect you want your shield to have on the negative energy coming your way. If you want to repel that negative energy back to the sender you may want to try the mirror shield, but remember - some people may be unconsciously sending negative energy out. Is it really fair to send it back to them? Maybe you instead want your shield to absorb the negative energy, using it to strengthen the shield itself? Be careful with this method as you need to be sure you can set your shield to neutralise and ground any negative energies before using them otherwise you may experience that 'black cloud following you' effect, although this can be done quite easily with practice - just visualise any energy coming into contact with your shield being cleansed, any negativity dissipating and the energy being renewed and reused.
Another exercise I like to do is 'moving' with the shield, see it follow my movements and be sure that, no matter what I do I can't break it - the shield is a part of me and cannot be broken by my own sudden movements.
Continue this as you exhale and build your shield. When you feel ready, you can also pull in other energy around you on the exhale, but again this should only be done if you have a decent amount of control in your energy work. Avoid taking energy from people or living creatures, and if you want to use the energy of a tree of plant then always ask its permission first. Pull this loose energy into your shield on the exhale and again remember that you will need your shield to be equipped to neutralise any energy coming in, just in case.
As I mentioned above, you can use this technique to get rid of your own negative thoughts and feelings; all you need to do is focus as you exhale on pushing any negativity from within yourself outside, specifically from the area you are harbouring it in (negative thoughts from the brain, negative emotions from the hearts, any injuries from the afflicted area, etc.), and into your shield where it will again be neutralised. You could see it just being pushed from out your shield and disappearing into the world, but again do you really want to be sending negative energies into the universe?
Finally, take care to maintain your shield. Try and visualise it around you as you are walking down the street, or as you lie down to sleep. I have found that a strong shield can last a couple of days (providing you are not experiencing any stressful or harmful circumstances) before it needs to be recharged. If I am going through a difficult time I will usually charge it once every 24 hours.
