Creating & Using Sigils

A sigil is very basically a symbol which you create for a specific purpose, to aid you in your magickal work. As it is created with your own hand and is so personal to you and your working, it can pack quite a punch.

sigil work is quick, creative and effective. You can create and empower a sigil to achieve almost anything. These can be used to bring something into your life, such as love or money, or to banish something, such as illness. Once you have created and charged a sigil, they are strongest if you use them again and again. They can be drawn onto objects, used as tattoos, stitched into clothing, etched into candles - the list of uses for them are endless.

You can just use your artistic talents to create a sigil that speaks to you, or you can use one of the two methods below to either create a sigil, or to find a base for a sigil which you can build on. Once you have created your sigil, you can charge it with your intent as described below, and begin using it pretty much immediately.

Method 1: A Sigil Wheel

To use the sigil Wheel, first think about what it is you want your sigil to help you achieve, i.e., 'protection'.

Remove all the repetitive letters in the word; for our word 'protection', we would be left with P - R - O - T - E - C - I - N.

Now simply draw the lines across the sigil wheel that correspond with the remaining letters. In this instance, you would start with 'P', draw a line to 'R', then draw a line to 'O' and so forth to create your sigil.

Method 2: Magick Squares (also known as Kameas Squares):

You can use the planetary correspondences and their magick squares to help define your sigil. To do this, again think of a word or phrase that sums up your intention. Now choose the planetary correspondence that best represents your petition.

Sun: Health, Vitality, Ego, Power, Success, Advancement, Leadership, Growth

Moon: Clairvoyance, Sleep, Emotions, Feminine, Birth, Reincarnation

Mars: Masculinity, Sexuality, Strength, Lust, Anger, Destruction, Medical Issues

Mercury: Intellect, Communication, Writing, Contracts, Information, Wisdom, Science, Memory

Jupiter: Success, Money, Growth, Abundance, Gambling

Saturn: Real Estate, Banks, Debt, Obstacles, Binding, Protection, Time, Knowledge, Discipline

Venus: Love, Arts, Music, Female Sexuality, Pleasure, Beauty, Luxury, Social Affairs

Next, you need to again take the letters of your chosen word or phrase, and exclude any repeating letters. When you have your letters, calculate their values using the table below:

Picture
For the word 'protection', and our letters P - R - O - T - E - C - I - N, we would end up with the values

7 + 9 + 6 + 2 + 5 + 3 + 9 + 5

Like we did for the sigil wheel, now trace your sigil by drawing lines from number to number on the magick square of the planetary correspondence you have chosen to use. For this particular one, I would choose the square associated with Saturn, and start with number '7', then draw a line to the number '9', then to '6', and so forth. You may wish to remove any repetitive numbers from your word/phrase to help tidy up the sigil.

Charging Sigils:

There are many different ways you can charge a Sigil with your intent once you have created it. These include:

  • Chanting Mantra's over your sigil, such as 'I am protected. No harm will befall me'

  • Raising energy and directing that energy into the sigil; you can do this by drumming, dancing, chanting, or using an energy ball, infusing it with your intent and then absorbing that energy ball into your Sigil

  • You could draw your sigil and then surround it with crystals which represent your intent to charge it

  • You can use your own breath, to breathe your intent into your sigil

  • You could create a crystal grid using crystals which mirror the intent for which you have created your sigil, and place a drawing of your sigil in the centre to charge
