Lithomancy is a form of divination using stones and other objects, 'casting' them, and then interpreting the way that the fall. You can find out more about how to get started and practice lithomancy on the lithomancy page in the 'divination' section of this site.
The sea, and water, is rules the emotions and our innerselves. You can create your own sea-themed lithomancy set to help you specifically when divining questions around your feelings, emotions, mental health, and your general emotional health. Examples of questions could include:
If you can get to a beach, I would recommend going for a walk with your intent in mind, and picking up any small pebbles, shells, sea glass, driftwood, etc., that calls to you to use in your kit. However, this isn't always possible, so you could always order items online. You can always use other sea-themed items that you might not find on a beach; for example, a small charm of a boat or a certain sea creatures, crystals, etc., (you could check out the sea correspondences page for more ideas).
The great thing about a lithomancy set, especially one which you have built yourself, is you can build on it over time as and when you feel it may need something new, or you find something else you think may suit your set.
If you are predominently using shells, then check out the shell meaning page to help you figure out the most suitable associations for the shells you are using. However, you may find when empowering your shell with your intended meaning, that the shell tells you a different meaning. Don't ignore it! Go with it - it may mean that you need to find another item to represent what you had originally intended, but this is a good sign. It shows that you are already getting intune with, and listening to, your set.
Once you have chosen your items, you will need to cleanse them, and as I alluded to above, empower your items with the meanings you have assigned to them. For more information on how to do this, please check out the lithomancy page in the divination section of this site. You may already have your own methods for cleansing and empowering, and if you do so then feel free to use them! As this is a sea-themed set, I cleansed my shells/stones using the smoke of an incense which I associated with the Celtic Sea Goddess Cliodhna, and some salt water, and then empowered and dedicated them in Cliodhna's name. In all honesty, you don't have to do any of the above, but I find that it helps.
In my set, I use the following:
Blue Glass Pebble: My 'personal' stone
Piece of Sea Glass: The Goddess is watching over you; look to a higher power and embrace their guidance
Red Pebble: Stop; something, or someone (it could even be yourself), is working against you, either maliciously or unintentionally
Green Pebble: Focus on your emotional health and what you need to do to balance it
Black Pebble: You are on the path, or close to, burn-out. Retreat into yourself and take some time to rest and recuperate
Limpet Shell: You are clinging onto something; you need to work out whether it is worth clinging on to, or whether you should find a new path
Cockle Shell: Joy, happiness, new opportunities, doors opening
Clam Shell: Peace, love, harmony; the need to make peace and move on, and create loving and nurturing relationships
Mussel Shell: Self discovery; take a look at your own feelings and biases, even the negative ones (such as hate, jealousy, etc.), before you progress. Try to understand them and learn from them before you continue.
This is just a guideline; you can add whatever you want, and with whatever meanings most resonate with you, to your set.
I have found that interpreting the readings of this set is slightly different to my 'main' lithomancy set. For example if I ask questions such as 'how does X feel about Y?' or 'What should I do about X', sometimes only the one or two shells which fall near the personal stone are relevant to reading instead all of them. In those readings which are wider in scope (such as, how will I handle X change which is on the horizon), I quite often find that the reading will be split into two or three paths; i.e., if you take this path, then A, B, and C will happen, but if you take that path then D, E, and F will happen. The most important thing is to use your intuition when interpreting your readings, and keep practicing until you get an idea as to how your set 'talks' to you.
