What Is The Throat Chakra?
The throat chakra is the fifth chakra we focus out of the seven main chakras. Its Sanskrit name is Vishuddha. It's colour is blue, and is represented by the symbol below.
Don't worry if when you are meditating with it you can't visualise the symbol itself; the colour blue will be enough.

The Throat Chakras Associations:
The Throat Chakra is located in the centre of the neck.
As you may expect, the Throat Chakra focuses on communication and expression. This communication can be verbal or non-verbal, externally to other people, or even internally to yourself.
With communication comes self expression. As well as helping you actually communicate with others and with yourself, this chakra can help you improve the way you express yourself via that communication. It can assist if you often find yourself in situations where you find it difficult to be truthful for whatever reason, or to speak up for yourself. It can also help you find the words and expressions you need to accurately get your point across.
The Throat Chakra isn’t just about communication here in the physical realm, but can also assist us in communicating with the spirit world and ‘other’ worlds.
The Throat Chakra can also help us express our creativity. It focuses on helping us to actually project those ideas we’ve had into reality, so we can start realising them.
I have found that, because of its location, blockages here can result in bottlenecks, which can then affect the flow of energy to your other chakras. Opening this chakra can therefore help you to open and balance your other chakras by allowing this energy to flow more freely. Not only that, but it is often an underappreciated chakra, especially in terms of its influence on other chakras. For example, you may work with your Heart Chakra to help you feel more compassionate and in touch with your emotions, but how helpful is that if you can’t communicate your emotions effectively? We may work with our Solar Plexus Chakra to increase our confidence and independence, but we also need to be able to communicate this confidence out to really benefit from it. As such, working with the Throat Chakra can actually have a positive impact on your other chakras too.
If This Chakra Is Blocked:
When this chakra becomes blocked, it is our communication that can suffer the most. You may find yourself too afraid to speak up, or unable to find the words you need. On the opposite end of the scale you may find that you talk too much, and your words jumbled or nonsensical, or that you have difficulties listening to others because you’re just focused on getting your ‘say’ in.
You may also find yourself susceptible to lying, or finding that you are unable to keep secrets and turn to gossiping about others.
Stimulating and Opening the Throat Chakra:
Any blue crystals are suitable for helping to cleanse and open this chakra. Good crystals to try include:
Oils and scents you could use include:
There are many different ways to help open and stimulate the Throat Chakra. Several are included below. You may want to combine some of them; for example, meditating with a mudra and chanting, or using a crystal and a chant.
“My words are strong and true, and spoken with love”
“I speak with truth and listen with openness”
“I will speak when I have something worth saying, and all will listen”
“I have the power to express what I want into the world”
“My words flow freely, filled with knowledge, compassion, and loving intent”
Each chakra also has a sound associated with it. You can help to open the chakras by chanting their sound out loud, focusing on the vibrations of the sound raising the chakra’s energy levels. The sound for the Throat Chakra is ‘HAM’. You will notice as we go through the chakras that they all have very similar sounds ‘LAM’, ‘VAM’, YAM’, so try to put some emphasis on the ‘H’ as you sound it out.
How will I know if my chakra is blocked?
If your chakra is blocked, you may experience any of the feelings or sensations listed above. Additionally, when working to activate your chakra it may just feel sluggish and slow; it may be a darker blue than usual, or you may see black ‘spots’ in the energy.
How do I cleanse my chakra?
Stimulating your chakra as listed above will help to cleanse them as you strengthen them. You can also focus specifically on cleansing it as you stimulate it. To do this, you want to imagine any energy you are directing to that energy - whether that is using crystals, oils, or visualising the energy from the earth or your own body travelling to that area - as pure, white, cleansing energy. When it reaches your chakra see it combining with your chakras energy, invigorating it and raising its vibration. See it glowing brighter, wiping out all of the black spots and strengthening your whole chakra.
Closing Your Chakra:
It is important to make sure that you close your chakra after working with it. If you leave it open, it will be more susceptible to negative energies. Closing it doesn’t mean it will stop working, you are just protecting it.
I find that the easiest way to close my chakras is to imagine zipping them up, like you would purse or a backpack. See a zip running up the centre of the chakra, the zips itself at the bottom, then mentally zip it up. See the chakra closing, but know that beneath this protective covering, the chakra is still active and working.

Stimulating and Opening the Throat Chakra:
Any blue crystals are suitable for helping to cleanse and open this chakra. Good crystals to try include:
- Blue Lace Agate
- Aquamarine
- Lapis Lazuli
- Sodalite
- Turquoise (I would highly recommend this one for the Throat Chakra!)
Oils and scents you could use include:
- Peppermint
- Lemon
- Vanilla
- Eucalyptus
- Chamomile (if you feel a blockage in this area is leading to you being too talkative or you are having trouble finding the right words to express yourself)
There are many different ways to help open and stimulate the Throat Chakra. Several are included below. You may want to combine some of them; for example, meditating with a mudra and chanting, or using a crystal and a chant.
- Lying down and placing one of the above crystals on your throat chakra area, and visualising the energy of the crystal cleansing and strengthening your chakra.
- Anointing the throat chakra area with one of the above oils and visualising it cleansing and strengthening your chakra (remember; always dilute oils, never apply them neat).
- Chant mantras design to help stimulate and strengthen your heart chakra. Examples of these are:
“My words are strong and true, and spoken with love”
“I speak with truth and listen with openness”
“I will speak when I have something worth saying, and all will listen”
“I have the power to express what I want into the world”
“My words flow freely, filled with knowledge, compassion, and loving intent”
- Visualise your chakra as a blue, glowing ball of light, and ‘feed’ that ball energy. You can do this by redirecting energy from other parts of your body into the Throat Chakra. There are many different flows through the body, all moving in different directions (which we will cover in more detail later on), but for now focus on this energy flowing round your body and into this chakra.
- With the Throat Chakra being focused around communication, writing and poem or a song and reciting it/singing it can help open this chakra. If you don’t feel like creating your own then feel free to use something someone else has written, but it will be stronger if you utilise your own creative expression.
- Bless water with the intention of opening your Throat Chakra. You can even add mint for example, as a herb which is associated with this chakra. As you drink it, visualise the cool water cleansing and empowering your Throat Chakra.
Each chakra also has a sound associated with it. You can help to open the chakras by chanting their sound out loud, focusing on the vibrations of the sound raising the chakra’s energy levels.
